Gary Player was a very gracious guest at the Vineyard Wine Market last April 9th, having his picture taken with the hundreds who stopped by to meet one of the greatest golfers to compete at the Augusta National.
The 3-time Masters winner shared some of this memories, gave commentary as he and the crowd watched some of the tournament on the TV and even gave advice on how to stay young (he does 1,000 sit-ups a day, doesn’t eat bacon or drink milk). Many stopped by to shake his hand and to buy autographed bottles of both his Muirfield (1959) and the newly released Master’s Label (1961). The new release celebrates Mr. Player’s 50th anniversary of winning his first Master’s Championship. They sold out of the Muirfield but autographed bottles of the Masters release are still available here at the Vineyard for $64.99.
A great value and an autograph to save even after you finish the wine!

The Gary Player Major Championship Series Augusta is a blend of 51% Syrah, 27% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Pinotage. The different cultivars were aged separately in French oak for 6 months after which the final blend was assembled and aged for a further 12 months in 40% new French oak, and the balance in second and third fill barrels.
The 1959 Open at Muirfield in Scotland marked the emergence of Gary Player as a world-class golfer, launching a career that encompassed 9 major titles. This 2003 vintage has been hailed as one of Stellenbosch’s greatest. The Gary Player Major Championship Series Muirfield is a blend of 38% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Pinotage and 8% Shiraz
Mr. Player isn’t only known for golf and wine. He also has a line of fine teas that we have here at the Vineyard. What a great way to treat your tournament guests to tea time after a long walk on the course.
