The Hess Collection Winery was established in 1978, just eight years after Donald Hess moved to California. According to the Hess Winery, few at the time were cultivating vines at elevation in Napa Valley, but Donald believed the volcanic slopes of Mount Veeder provided the “ideal combination of soils and microclimates to yield elegant wines with rich, complex, flavors” (hesscollection.com).
